Find It, Then Frame It: Bird Photography with Tokina Reflex Lenses and the Kenko UltraVIEW EX Compact 8x32

Birdwatching and bird photography are often treated as two separate pursuits that compete for the same attention. One asks you to observe. The other asks you to capture. Most of the time, the camera wins and the watching gets lost.


This project set out to combine them. A pair of Kenko UltraVIEW EX Compact 8x32 binoculars around my neck, a Sony A7IV and a Tokina Reflex lens for bird photography in my hands. The binoculars would find and read the bird. The reflex would frame it. Herons, parakeets, geese, gulls and a grebe became the test.


The question was whether two compact, lightweight tools could work as one system in the field.


Why These Two Belong Together

A reflex lens has a weakness that every user learns quickly. At long focal lengths the field of view is extremely narrow, and the lens is manual focus. Finding a small bird in the viewfinder, in foliage, at distance, is often harder than photographing it.


Binoculars solve that. The UltraVIEW EX Compact has a real field of view of 8.3 degrees, which is 145 metres wide at 1,000 metres. That is generous for 8x magnification, and it makes tracking a moving bird far easier than hunting for it through a telephoto lens.

So the workflow became simple:


  • Find the bird with the binoculars.

  • Read its behaviour.

  • Note where it sits against the landscape.

  • Raise the camera only when the moment is worth making.


That last step matters most. It is the same principle from my earlier reflex work: behaviour comes first, and the frame is built in advance. The binoculars made that habit almost automatic.


The Binoculars: Light Enough to Forget


The first thing to say about the UltraVIEW EX Compact 8x32 is its weight. At 375g and 108.5 x 49.5 x 124mm, it is small for a 32mm objective. Large-aperture binoculars are usually bright but heavy. Kenko has kept the brightness and removed much of the bulk.


That matters when you are already carrying a camera body and a mirror lens. Every extra gram shortens a session, and these binoculars added almost nothing. They sat against my chest and stayed out of the way until I needed them.


The optics are as specified: full multi-coating, dielectric multilayer prism coating and phase coating. In the field, that showed as a clean, bright image with natural colour. It was easy to pick out the green of a parakeet in dense yew, or the grey and white of a heron against dark conifer.


Some practical details also earned their place:


  • Twist-up eyecups with 15.2mm eye relief. Comfortable, quick to set, and easy to raise repeatedly.

  • Nitrogen-filled, waterproof body (IPX7). London weather is unpredictable, and there was no worry about fogging or a sudden shower.

  • 2m close focus. Useful when a bird landed nearer than expected.


There are honest limits. A 4mm exit pupil is a reminder that this is a compact, so under dense cedar in fading light it gives up some ground to larger binoculars. And 8x will not bring a distant bird in as close as a spotting scope. For handheld birdwatching, though, 8x is a sweet spot: stable, wide and forgiving.


The Herons: Patience, Then Precision


Grey herons are the ideal test subject for this pairing, because everything about them rewards watching before shooting.


Through the binoculars, you see what the camera would miss: the slow shift of weight before a step, the tightening of the neck before a strike, the moment a bird decides it is done standing still. That awareness led directly to the frame with the wings fully open, where the bird was anticipated rather than chased.


The herons in the cedar were a different problem. Distant birds sitting in dense, layered conifer are difficult for any lens. Here the reflex's manual focus worked in its favour. There is no autofocus to hunt through branches, and the focus point stays exactly where you place it. The binoculars found the bird among the branches, and the reflex, checked with focus magnification, resolved the feather detail against the dark green.


The Parakeets: Fast, Loud and Restless


Ring-necked parakeets are close to the opposite of the heron. They move constantly, call loudly and rarely hold a pose.

The binoculars did two jobs here. They helped me find birds by their movement in the canopy, and they showed where the birds returned to. The nest hollow in the tree trunk became a fixed point I could frame in advance and wait on.


The palm leaf sequence came from the same approach. The frame was chosen first, with the dark background and the sweep of the fronds, and the parakeet stepped into it. The flight frames, with their bright teal wing feathers against deep green, took more discipline. Shutter speed came first, bursts came at the moments that signalled movement, and the reflex became more instinctive as the session went on.


The reflex signature is also visible in these images. Out-of-focus highlights form ring-shaped bokeh, most clearly in the parakeet on the branch with the bright, dappled background. It is a rendering characteristic of the lens rather than a flaw, and when the background is chosen well it adds texture instead of distraction.


The Geese: Where Reading Behaviour Pays Off


Geese are not usually the birds people reach for first. They are large, familiar and easy to overlook. This sequence changed that for me.


Through the binoculars, the pattern was clear before the camera came up. A goose bathes: head dipping, water thrown over its back, the whole body rolling. Then comes the release. The bird rises, lifts its chest and opens its wings in a full flap to shake the water loose. Once I had watched that build a single time, I knew where to be ready for the next.


That is where the pairing earns its place. The binoculars gave me the sequence, and the reflex gave me the reach to stay well back and let the birds carry on undisturbed. Focus was set on the spot where the bathing happened, then refined as the bird rose. Shutter speed did the rest, holding the spray as individual droplets and the wingtips sharp mid-motion.


The dark water is doing quiet work. It lets the spray read as light and gives the pale breast a clean edge. The frames where other geese crowd the background did not make the final selection. The ones where the bird stands alone did.


The resting goose is the counterpoint: head tucked into its feathers, plumage soft and textured, everything still. It is the same bird and the same lens, with the opposite mood.


Gulls and Grebes: Light and Water


Black-headed gulls against dark water test exposure more than focus. White plumage sits next to near-black water, and there is very little margin for error. I exposed to protect the highlights, kept the file slightly dark, and let the water fall away. The reflections in the last frames of the sequence show what that discipline gives you: a white bird, a mirrored wing and almost nothing else.


The great crested grebe was a slower study. Calm water, a low angle and a quiet approach. This is where the compact size of the reflex helps, because the whole kit can be brought down to water level without any struggle.


What the Pairing Changed


The practical gains were obvious: less weight, easier carrying and longer time in the field.


The deeper change was in how the day felt. Binoculars slow you down in a useful way. You watch a bird for what it is before you decide whether it is a photograph. The herons taught patience, the parakeets taught readiness, and the geese showed what happens when you know a sequence before it unfolds. That habit carried straight into the frames, which are calmer, better timed and more considered than they would have been if I had led with the camera.


The reflex lens rewards that approach. It is manual, narrow and deliberate, and it works best when you already know what the bird is about to do. The binoculars supplied that knowledge.


Practical Notes


Workflow: Find with the binoculars, note the bird's position against a landmark, then lower them and raise the camera. Pre-focus to the estimated distance, then refine with magnification.


Shooting format: RAW throughout. Dark backgrounds and white plumage need the latitude to protect highlights without losing shadow detail.


Shutter speed: Prioritised over ISO every time. Noise can be refined in post-processing; motion blur cannot. This mattered most for the goose splashes and the parakeets in flight.


Editing approach: Restrained. Denoise applied selectively where ISO was raised, with the eye and feather structure protected.


Carrying: Binoculars on the neck, camera in hand. The combined weight stayed comfortable across long sessions.


The Kenko UltraVIEW EX Compact 8x32 brought a bright, wide and genuinely light view that never became a burden. The Tokina Reflex lenses brought reach, control and a distinctive rendering to birds that would otherwise stay out of range.

Together, they made birdwatching and bird photography feel like one activity.
